Obituary for George James Collins

George Collins Sr., 92, of Shelton entered peacefully into eternal rest on December 22, 2016 at the Bishop Wicke Health Center surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted and loving husband of the late Eleanor N. Frawley Collins. Mr. Collins was born in Ansonia on July 13, 1924, the son of the late Raymond Collins and Elizabeth Mudry Collins Pickhardt and has been a Shelton resident since 1985. George graduated from the Assumption School, the Ansonia High School class of 1942, proudly and honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was employed for many years as a sales manager for the Amerling Company in West Haven, CT. George was a devoted Catholic and lifelong member of the Valley Council 23 Knights of Columbys, as well as the Elks U.S.A. He became an avid golfer and was a former member of the HIghland Golf Club in Shelton, CT and Race Brook Country Club in Orange, CT. He also enjoyed reading, as well as watching the History Channel, televised sports including golf tournaments and the University of Notre Dame football. He loved socializing with friends, neighbors, fellow residents and caregivers, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially with his granddaughters as well as his nieces, nephews, and their families. George was the beloved father of George J. "Jim" Collins Jr. and beloved father in law of his son's wife Joanne Collins, the cherished grandfather of Jenna and Kristyn Collins, the loving brother of John "Jack" Collins and the late Marion Fisher. George's family would like to thank in a special way the Bishop Wicke Center Pavillion Three nursing and support staff for the excellent care and support they gave George especially during his final days. Friends may greet his family on Tuesday December 27 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the John T. Bennett Funeral Home located at 91 N. Cliff Street Ansonia, CT 06401 on Wednesday, December 28th. His funeral will leave the Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. to the Church of the Assumption located at 23 N. Cliff Street Ansonia for a Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery with full military honors. At the request of his family in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Bishop Wicke Health Center c/o United Methodist Homes 580 Long Hill Ave Shelton
