Obituary for Betty Jo Shields
BETTY JO (APPEL) SHIELDS
AUSTINTOWN - Betty Jo (Appel) Shields, 82, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016.
She was born on May 4, 1934, in Youngstown, daughter to the late Clarence and Eva (Wilson) Appel.
Betty was a South High School graduate and went on to work for Ohio Bell.
She married Donald W. Shields on July 18, 1953, and they would go on to celebrate 53 years together, before Donald’s passing on Dec. 21, 2006.
Betty went back to work for Austintown Schools cafeteria for many years before retiring. Betty was a member of the Christ Church Presbyterian and was also an Eastern Star member. She enjoyed going on different bus trips to casinos and being involved with her couples’ club.
Betty will be remembered most for her love of her family, especially her granddaughters, and being there for all of their events. Left to celebrate Betty’s memory are her sons, Gary (Penny Jo) Shields and Larry (Debbi) Shields; her granddaughters, Sara (Tom) Platz and Mallory (Adam) Capretta; and her great-grandchildren, Maxton and Amelia Capretta and Bryson Platz. In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was preceded in death by her sisters, Donna Zeigler and Florence Padgett; and her brother-in-law, Lindy Zeigler. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, 5797 Mahoning Ave., where a funeral service will follow at noon. Entombment will take place at Green Haven Memorial Gardens.
