Obituary for Harriet K. Herskowitz
Harriet (Honey) Kunin Herskowitz, born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1927, died peacefully on April 1, 2016 at the age of 88 from complications related to cancer.
Harriet displayed a lifelong passion for education, dedication to family and caring for others. After graduating from high school in Bridgeport, Conn. and Hood College in Maryland, she received her M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn. in 1972. Harriet joined the faculty of University of Akron in 1973, eventually becoming Chair of the Early Childhood Education Department. She taught and mentored generations of early childhood educators to develop what she considered our most precious resource, our young children.
Harriet Kunin wed Herbert Herskowitz in June of 1950, beginning an adventure of 65 years of marriage, sharing their love of teaching, family, opera and of course each other. They first met in 1945 on a blind date set up by Herb''s mother and Harriet''s older sister, who knew each other from Hadassah, a Jewish Women''s organization. Their love spans a remarkable 70 years of time with family, friends and travels across the United States and Europe.
Harriet was predeceased by her daughter, Lynn in 2011 and husband, Herb in 2015. She is survived by daughter, Jane and her husband Frank of Huber Heights Ohio; grandchildren, Sarah and Erin; great-grandchildren, Adrian and Jayden; numerous nieces, nephews and countless friends and admirers.
Always thinking about serving others, in 2013 Harriet and Herb initiated the Harriet and Herb Herskowitz Education Fund to provide financial support to students in the early childhood development program at the University of Akron''s Summit College.
