Obituary for Mary Pompili

CANFIELD – Mary Jane Pompili, 81, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 8, 2016, at the Ohio State University Ross Heart Hospital in Columbus, with her family by her side. Mary Jane was born Oct. 14, 1934, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late John and Mary Stahura Cherniga, and was a lifelong area resident. She was a 1953 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, and worked at Youngstown State University as an administrative assistant in the facilities department for 28 years, retiring in 1996.
Mary Jane was proud of her Ukrainian heritage and was an active member of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown. She was a founding member and former president of the St. Anne School Parents’ Guild Association, and she was also active in the Youngstown Cursillo Movement, where she served on the Secretariat and acted as the Lay Director. Mrs. Pompili enjoyed spending time with her friends, playing cards, and was an avid reader. She loved keeping a warm and loving home that hosted many family and friends over the years.
Mary Jane leaves her husband of 60 years, Vince Pompili, whom she married in 1955; a daughter, Karen (Kevin) Klasic of Landsdale, Pa.; two sons, Vincent (Sue) Pompili of Columbus and Gene (Marie) Pompili of Hudson; and six beautiful granddaughters, Kristen, Maria, Lauren, Caroline, Madeline, and Jessica. A brother, Edward Cherniga, and a sister, Josephine Maruskin, preceded her in death.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 10, at Kinnick Funeral Home 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown, where a prayer service will take place at 6 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 10:15 a.m., Monday, Jan. 11, at the funeral home, and will continue at 11 a.m. at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church, 4310 Kirk Rd., Austintown. Interment will follow at Green Haven Memorial Gardens.
