Obituary for Thelma Smith
THELMA (WEIMER) SMITH“Together Again” AUSTINTOWN – Thelma (Weimer) Smith, a resident of Austintown since 1947, passed to her heavenly rest on Dec. 21, 2015. She was born in the family home on Raccoon Road on May 30, 1923, the daughter of the late Bert Sr. and Amy Amelia (Chagnot) Weimer. Thelma was a 1941 graduate of Chaney High School, where she was a member of the band, Girls Athletic Association, Library Club and Personality Club. She was a student assistant in the program for blind students. Thelma would read lessons aloud so the blind could transcribe them into braille. In the 1941 yearbook, it was said of Thelma, “She does little kindnesses, which most leave undone or despise.”
Thelma married Norman Smith on April 25, 1942, in the parsonage of the United Methodist Church in Cumberland, W.Va. They enjoyed 67 years of marriage until Norman’s passing on Nov. 15, 2009. Thelma worked at Ben Franklin’s in Canfield for many years, Canfield Colonial Lanes and Acme Grocery, when they had stores in Youngstown. She was a member of REACT, the Saxon Club and the Austintown Community Church. For years, Thelma was the lead teacher in the kindergarten class of the Sunday school. She also worked on the Canfield Fair Project. Thelma was den mother of Den No. 3 of Cub Pack No. 84. She was an active room mother in the PTA. She loved to sew, and hosted a sewing club in her home. Thelma enjoyed gardening, canning and cooking. She was in many woman’s and couples leagues and tournaments, winning many awards for her bowling skills. In her later years, she was a bird watcher. She researched types and habits of all birds that visited her feeder. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; daughter Debra; brothers Edward (Edna and Helen) Weimer, Bert Jr. (Nadine) Weimer, and Russell (Betty and Freda) Weimer; sister Mildred (Jake) Marshall; and sisters-in-law Ann Weimer and Margaret Foertch. Thelma is survived by her sons and their families, Norman (Diana) Smith of New Middletown, Rev. Gary (Lynn) Smith, with whom she made her home in Canton, and Dennis Smith of Austintown. There are eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and brother Glenn Weimer, also surviving. Funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Austintown Community Church, 242 S. Canfield Niles Road, with Pastor Mark Nelson and her son, the Rev. Gary A. Smith officiating. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Green Haven Memorial Gardens.
