Obituary for Alice Jane Gardner

Obituary, Mrs. Alice J. Gardner

Alice Jane Walton was born on the second day of December, 1853, at Rensalear, Indiana, and closed her earthly pilgrimage at her home on Olathe, Thursday morning, June 23, aged 67 years, 6 months and 21 days.

On the 17th day of March 1874, she was united in marriage to nelson T. Gardner, at Pleasant Plains, Ia. For 27 years this man and woman walked together in holy wedlock until in 1901, the husband was taken, since which time the widow has carried the responsibilities of leadership in the home.

Mrs. Gardner was the mother of seven children, six of whom are living and were present at the funeral. These are Rev. Augustine Gardner, pastor of the Presbyterian church, Clinton, Kan., henry, Cora, Frank, and Jesse of Olathe; Clarence of Bartlesville, Okla. Charles died nine years ago.

The illness of the deceased covered a period of one year but not until recently she was confined to her bed. The end came peacefully. A day or two before her death she expressed to her pastor her confidence in the promises of God. This is but as it would naturally be when we recall that when a child she began her Christian live so that all of these years she has been in the fellowship and service of the Master thus preparing for this journey which all must take. Well could she say with the Psalmist, “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

The funeral was conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. V. Burns, from the Methodist church, and the body laid to rest in the Olathe cemetery.
