Obituary for Joseph L McCormick

JOSEPH MCCORMICK

MINERAL RIDGE - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon on Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church for Joseph McCormick, who died peacefully, Sunday afternoon at Meridian Arms Nursing Home, surrounded by his family.

Affectionately known as “Joe Mac,” Joseph was born March 12, 1942, son of Daniel and Kathleen (O’Hara) McCormick.

Youngstown born and raised, he attended St. Ann’s School, was a football player and 1961 graduate of Ursuline High School, followed by attendance at Youngstown State University. He joined the U.S. Navy serving on the USS Proteus AS-19 during the Vietnam War. He began his career with Ransom and Randolph Company as a sales rep, followed by Y&N Railroad, where he met future jewelry partner, Dean McClain. The two formed the McClain Corporation. Joe worked simultaneously for General Electric Lamp Plant as a mechanic, where he met his future wife, Rose. In 1980, he and his wife, Rose, started their own corporation, McCormick Jewelers Inc. in Austintown, retiring in 2003.

An avid sports lover, Joe was a boxer in the Navy, was instrumental in starting the Proteus Pirates Football League, loved golf, and played frequently until a serious hip injury curtailed his game.

Joe was a thoughtful, caring man, a delightfully engaging storyteller, toastmaster and speaker. He had a captivating, easy charm. He loved people and enjoyed camaraderie with his fellow Legionaries and was active in many charitable organizations. He was a member of the Austintown Memorial American Legion Post No. 301. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Argus Lodge No. 535 Canfield, grand council Royal and Select Masons of Ohio, the grand chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, and St. John’s Commandery No. 20 Knights Templar Youngstown. He was past commander of Post No. 301, past commander of the American Legion and past ninth district assistant adjutant. He was also a deacon and youth counselor at St. Rocco’s Church.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Rose Marie (Righetti); his only son, Joseph E. McCormick, a stepdaughter, Denise DiLallo of Arizona; brothers Daniel (Cory) McCormick of Tennessee, and James (Margaret) McCormick; a sister, Bernadette (Tom) Winsen; grandchildren Cole and Shane McCormick; numerous nieces and nephews; and brothers-in-law Frank (Carol) Righetti and Alex (Linda) Righetti of Nevada.

His parents and sister Peggy Davis of Dayton preceded him in death.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., today, at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel. Argus Lodge will hold a Masonic service at 8 p.m. and the Tri-State Marine Corps will hold a service at 8:15 p.m. Friends and family may also call from 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday, at the funeral home, prior to Mass at St. Anthony’s at noon.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting all donations go to Hospice of the Valley, Poland.

The family would like to express appreciation for the wonderful care Joe received from the aides and staff at Meridian Arms Nursing Home.
