Josefices "Joe" Rogers, Sr.

Josefices "Joe" Rogers, Sr. was born September 13, 1917 in Union Springs, Ala. to the late Cullen Roland and Sylvester (Smart) Rogers. He passed away January 9, 2015. He joined the church and was baptized in 1933 in Union Springs, Ala.

He relocated to Akron, Ohio where he joined Phillips Chapel C.M.E. Church under the leadership of Rev. I. C. Freeman. Roger had been a member of Phillips Chapel for over 60 years. He was an officer of the church and served on the Trustee board, Sunday school member, and was on the Steward Board. He did community service and served in the U.S. Army as a veteran in World War II, and was honorably discharged. He worked at several rubber companies and was an entrepreneur and owner of a dry cleaning business. He worked and retired from the City of Akron with over 30 years of service. Joe loved to garden and keep a beautiful yard.

He was a family man who spoke words of wisdom. He helped so many people during his life. He was a strong-will person and knew God was powerful and God is love. The Bible was his favorite book, and his favorite book was Job, and the story of the Prodigal Son. His favorite songs were Jesus Walk With Me and At The Cross.

Preceded in death by his first wife, Georgia E. Rogers, second wife, Lucille M. Rogers; parents; sons, Josefices Rogers Jr. and Trido Rogers; grandsons, Josefices Rogers and Tyrone Howard; granddaughter, Candace Rogers; sisters, Alvador Jones, Cynthia Ivory, Inez Jackson, Austrilia Wade and Dapolia Rogers. He leaves to cherish his memory, son, Cullen Roland Rogers Sr.; daughter and caregiver, Jarvia Rogers; daughter-in-law, Francis Rogers; grandsons, Josefices-Greg (Corrinne) Rogers III, Cullen (Tameka) Rogers Jr., Roland "Tookie" Lloyd, Roshawn (Keisha) Howard, Lamont Howard, and Dewain Green; granddaughters, Melody (Adam) Bufford, Jarvial Greene, Cherice Cloyd Rogers, Trinayshia Rogers, Jazmine Williams, Moesha Rogers and Deidra Clarke; brother, Nathaniel Rogers; sister, Ocilla Pickett; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Service will be held Friday, January 16, 2015 at 12:30 p.m. at Phillips Chapel C.M.E. Church, 413 Iroquois Ave., Akron, OH 44305, Pastor Sheree Winn officiating. Interment at Mt. Peace Cemetery. Friends may visit at the church from 11:30 a.m. until time of service. Procession will form and condolences may be sent to 1154 Kinzie St., Akron, OH 44305.
