Obituary for Elva Huffman

COLUMBIANA – Elva E. Huffman, 107, passed away early Sunday morning at Whispering Pines Village of infirmities of age.

Elva was born on Dec. 29, 1906, in Columbiana, a daughter of Jonas and Laura E. (Longanecker) Horst.

She graduated from the Mahoning County Normal School in 1926, and attended Kent State University and Youngstown State University. Elva began teaching in Boardman in 1928, and was employed as a school teacher by Boardman, Sebring, and Beaver Local school districts, retiring from Beaver Local in 1974, after 30 years. She was a proud member of the Ohio State Teacher‘s Retirement System. She also attended the Midway Mennonite Church for many years.

Elva leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Gerald W. Huffman of New Waterford and Leonard B. Huffman of Shade; one sister, Hazel Kurtz of Verona, Wis.; three  grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lurtie W. Huffman; her sisters, Mildred Snyder, Katherine Pine-VanDyke, and Esther Ernst; and brothers Waldo, Howard, Arthur, Galen, Robert, and Myron Horst.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 24, at 11 a.m., at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home, 154 S. Elm St., Columbiana.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 24, also at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home, 154 S. Elm St., Columbiana.
