Obituary for Gene Henry

YOUNGSTOWN - A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at the Green Haven Memorial Gardens Chapel in Canfield, followed by a military service for Gene Henry, 88.

Mr. Henry was born Oct. 9, 1925, the son of John T. and Maye Bender Henry of Penn Run, Pa.

He attended school in Heilwood, Pa.

Gene was a paratrooper during World War ll with the 17th Airborne Division in France. He was transferred into the 82nd Airborne Division, 504th regiment, then the 508th regiment where he served on the Honor Guard at General Eisenhower’s Headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany. He was discharged June 6, 1946.

Gene came to Youngstown on Jan. 1, 1947. He worked at Republic Steel and was a member of Teamster Local 377. He was a local and long distance truck driver for 40 years and skilled tradesman.

He retired in 1987 from SME Leasing. He was a former member of the American Legion Post 565 in Boardman, and the Ohio Highway Patrol Auxiliary and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 9571 of Ellsworth, where he served on the Honor Guard.

Gene enjoyed many years of hunting in Pennsylvania and Ohio, bowling and camping with his family.

Gene leaves his sisters, Francis Lucille and Geneva; and his children, Karen Hungerford, Susan Tarbet, Dean (Valerie) Henry, Gene (Ginger) Henry and Diane (Steve) Komara. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Lori (Shawn), John, Jenny, Shawn, Brianna (Mike), Ryan, Vanessa, Tiffany and Joey; as well as four great-grandchildren, Blake, Conner, Isabel and Alexa.

Besides his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Juanita (Weakland), and eight brothers and sisters.

Gene was a member of the Christ Our Savior Parish-St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.

The family would like to thank his doctors, especially Dr. Jeffrey Resch, his friends and staff at The Blackburn Retirement Home in Poland, where he resided for the past year and a half and the Hospice of the Valley.
