Obituary for Adelaide Briggs Carter

                                                                                                                                                                     CARTER ADELAIDE BRIGGS CARTER died August 6, 2014, with her daughter by her side at the Main Campus of University Hospital in Cleveland, where her late husband, Dr. John Robert Carter dedicated nearly 50 years of his professional career. Burial services for Mrs. Carter, 93, of Willoughby, will be at 12:15 PM on Saturday, August 9, 2014, at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens, 11521 Chillicothe Rd., Chesterland, OH 44026. Born January 19, 1921, in Utica, NY, she and her husband lived in Willoughby since 1966. Adelaide graduated from the University of Rochester with a B.S. and later received her nursing degree at the Strong Memorial School of Nursing. She continued work in Hematology working at the blood bank of the Medical School at the University of Iowa. As an active volunteer throughout her life she worked the American Red Cross, recently having received a 35 year award. She was a member of the Women''s Club of Willoughby. One of the joys of her lifetime was her commitment to the P.E.O., a women''s organization that owns Cottey College in Nevada, MO, the only non-sectarian college in the country owned by and operated by and for women. They also provide full scholarships to women around the world. She was a 57 year member and a President of the local Chapter A.H. Adelaide is survived by daughters Jeanne Wilmot (Daniel) Halpern and Marilyn Anne (Les) Thompson and granddaughter Lily Wilmot Halpern. A celebration honoring her life will follow the committal services at Molinari''s in Mentor. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Carter-Makley Lectureship, Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, 10900 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106.
