Obituary for Joyce Theken

 

Joyce Elizabeth Bloeser Theken

90, of Canton, Ohio passed away peacefully Monday surrounded by her family. Joyce was born Nov. 24, 1923 in St. Paul, Minnesota. She graduated from Johnson High School and attended the University of Minnesota.  Joyce joined the WAVES in 1943 and was assigned to a base in Seattle, Wash. She married Navy veteran Paul Frank Theken in 1946 in Massillon, Ohio. They moved to Washington D.C. where she worked for the Brazilian Embassy and returned to Canton, Ohio in 1950 after Paul''s graduation from Georgetown University. She will be sincerely missed by her husband, Paul, who supported her and sat faithfully by her side throughout the last days of her life.

Also surviving are her three children, Sandy Muirhead-Gould, Mark (Keka) Theken and Paul Andrew Theken of Canton; her loving sister, Ruth Mary Tscholl of Canton; four grandchildren, John (Christina) Muirhead-Gould, Andrew (Kate) Theken, Sara (Michael) Fay, Averel (Jeff) Meden; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joyce faced her health challenges with courage and dignity and continued to have a sense of humor. She loved to cook and entertain, and many family birthdays and holidays were spent around her dining room table. In 1973, Joyce and Ruth Mary started Encore, a successful consignment business. Joyce and Paul were avid golfers and members of Shady Hollow Country Club for over 45 years. She was a longtime member of St. Michael''s Parish and former president of the Ladies'' Guild; she started the couples'' bridge group in 1963, and it continues today. As a bridge teacher, passionate duplicate bridge player, and member of the ACBL, she became a life master in 1976. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 5th at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Canton, with Fr. Donald King as celebrant. Burial will take place at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.
