Obituary for Sarah A. Hoch
GOLD STAR MOTHER DIES AT AGE OF 83; – Mr. Sarah Miller Hoch, widow of John A. Hoch, died August 24th at her home, 246 Walnut street. A Gold Star mother, she made a pilgrimage in 1932 to France to the grave of her son, John, who paid the supreme sacrifice in World War One. It was in memory of her son and of the late Curtis Balthaser that the local legion Post was named. She was a charter member of the Auxiliary, faithful in attendance, and loyal to its obligations. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Serena (Weiss) Hoch. Her funeral was held this afternoon at two o’clock at her home, with further services at St. Lutheran John’s church, the Rev. J. W. Bittner officiating. Burial in Hope cemetery. On Wednesday night the Legion Auxiliary at the direction of Mrs. Eva Frey, conducted a brief service at the Schaeffer Funeral Home. Thirty great-grandchildren, 32 grandchildren, eight children and three sisters survive. Her children are Mrs. Nelson Lamb and Mrs. John Dries, Kutztown; Frank Earl and Mrs. Ammon Biehl, Kutztown R. D.; Mrs Charles Shucker, Fleetwood; Harry Fleetwood R. D. and Mrs. James George, Lebanon. Her sisters include Mrs. Manthana Godfrey, st. Louis, Mo.; Mrs Dora Kercher, Allentown; and Mrs. Annie Newkerk, Philadelphia. [Patriot,8/28/1947]
