Obituary for Jr. Robert Jones

Robert Jones Jr., a hard working family man, made his transition to rest and peace on Monday, June 9, 2014 in Akron, Ohio.  He was 84 and the last of six siblings to pass away.

Robert was born the youngest son of Robert and Maudie (Rue) Jones in Bessemer, Alabama on April 7, 1930 and grew up in the Long Creek community of Georgiana, Alabama where he was later raised by his paternal grandparents, Margaret and Calvin Jones after his mother died.  He moved to Akron in 1950 to find work and join his other siblings.  Not long after arriving, he met and married Geraldine Carroll of Youngstown, Ohio.  They stayed together 61 years until she passed away on October 4, 2011.  They had four children.

Robert supported his family as an employee of the City of Akron Sanitation Department. He worked second jobs to make ends meet and managed to attend night school to earn his high school diploma.  Robert retired early but kept busy doing handy work, tending to his vegetable garden, planting fruit trees and growing flowers in his yard.  He also enjoyed fishing and backyard barbequing on summer holidays.  Deeply faithful, Robert was a longtime member of St. John CME Church.

The loved ones Robert leaves behind include daughters, Linda Jones of Frisco, Texas; Roberta and Roxanne Jones of Akron; grandchildren Robert Wilkins, Quinn Coleman of Cincinnati, Immanuel Jones of Akron, James and Jamille Hill of Akron and Gregory Hill of Chicago, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.  His beloved son, Gregory Allan Jones and grandson Dorian Mandela Fields, are deceased.  He also leaves “Peanut”, his loyal pet dog.
