Obituary for Joseph H Murtaugh

JOSEPH H. MURTAUGH

HUBBARD - There will be services held at 6 p.m. Monday, June 2, 2014, at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home for Joseph H. Murtaugh, 87, who passed away at his home with his family by his side on Friday, May 30, 2014.

He was born to the late James and Anne Shaffer Murtaugh on Oct. 20, 1926.

Joe leaves to honor his memory his wife of 65 years, the former Alberta Conn; his daughter, Beverly (Gary) Bartholomew, formerly from Hubbard; and three granddaughters, Amanda (Dominic) Mastropietro, Janine (David) Bradley, and Megan Bartholomew.

Joe is predeceased by his son, Joseph P. (Delores) Murtaugh; and siblings, James (Slyvia) Murtaugh, Kenneth (Norma) Murtaugh, Mildred (Richard) Armatrout, and Catherine (James) Griffith.

In 2008, Joe and Alberta adopted a Border Collie/Pyrenees puppy named Bella Boo, who has brought immense joy and entertainment to their lives.

Joe was a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving as a Sergeant in World War II. He was in the South West Pacific, stationed in the Philippines and Korea in the 6th Infantry Company M.

He was employed at U.S. Steel for 45 years retiring in 1988. In his retirement, Joe loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener and bird watcher. One of his favorite hobbies was designing and building his own birdhouses to thwart the squirrels.

He will be celebrated for his adventurous spirit, his admonition to always have a compass handy, and creativity. Joe would never buy something he could build on his own. One of his defining characteristics was his love for children and his ability to encourage them to dream big. He was affectionately known as “Papa Joe” to his grandchildren and friends.

His family would like to thank his faithful friends at Calvary Baptist Church and the nurses from Southern Care Hospice for their support, love, and care.

In lieu of flowers, Joe’s family suggests memorial donations be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 132 Church St., Hubbard, OH 44425.

There will be calling hours two hours prior to the service on Monday, June 2, 2014, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.

Family and friends are invited to visit the funeral home’s website at www.stewart-kyle.com to share memories and condolences
