BERLIN CENTER - Services celebrating the life of George Eckis, 88, will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Canfield Chapel. George died Saturday evening at Austinwoods.

George was born March 8, 1936, in Berlin Center, the son of George O. and Bessie V. Hull Eckis, and was a lifelong resident.

George retired in 1986 from Automatic Sprinkler, where he was an expediter and pipe fitter. He was a member of National Sprinkler Fitters Union 669, Ellsworth Silver Threads, Berlin Center Historical Society, AARP, and was a member of the Berlin Center Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He served his country in World War II in the U.S. Army, where he was wounded in Germany, and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. George was also a member of the Ellsworth VFW No. 9571.

He will sadly be missed by his daughters; Sandra Schooley (Mike Illencik) of Austintown, and Georgia (Tom) Cochran of Canfield; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Violet M. (Kale), whom he married Oct 4, 1945, and who died Feb 4, 2013; daughter Bridgitte Bowling; half-sister, Bernice Shelar; and half-brothers, Harold and Ferris Eckis.

Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Canfield Chapel.
