Obituary for Helen Sabanick

“Together Again”

CANFIELD - Prayers will begin Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at St. Christine Church for Helen L. Sabanick, 90, who died Monday morning at Hampton Woods.

Helen was born March 7, 1924, in Youngstown, the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Chech) Markusewski.

She graduated from Campbell Memorial High School and later attended Youngstown College, and worked at General Fireproofing during World War II. She was a member of St. Christine Church and its Infant Jesus of Prague Guild. She was also an original member of Angels for Easter Seals, Girard Ladies Golf League and Tippecanoe Country Club.

Her husband, Steve Sabanick, whom she married June 27, 1942, died July 17, 2000.

She is survived by her daughter, Carla (Bill) Thomas of Boardman; her son Steve “Skip” (Jan) Sabanick of Salem; eight grandchildren, Joani (Dan) Fiopiseli, Steve Sabanick, Kim Sabanick, David (Trish) Sabanick, Melissa (Brad) Zreny, Bill Thomas, Kelly (Robin) Kempf and Kerry Thomas; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Markey.

The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to Crossroads Hospice of Akron.

Helen’s family would also like to thank Dr. Robert Wetzel, the wonderful staff at Woodlands Assisted Living and Crossroads Hospice of Akron for all of their professional and compassionate care.
