AUSTINTOWN - Margaret C. Phelps, 91, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, after a long and fulfilling life.

Margaret was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Walter and Caroline Staudmeister, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a graduate of South High School, and was a devoted homemaker who dedicated her adult life to raising and caring for her family.

In her younger years, Margaret played softball and worked at Idora Park. She was a Saving Stamp Lady volunteer at Woodside Elementary School, was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Bluebird Leader, a Sunday School teacher, and a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Phelps enjoyed bowling, and served as secretary and treasurer for several leagues. She enjoyed camping, was a member of Coachman Drifters Group No. 353, and she especially loved the annual camping trips she took to Myrtle Beach.

Margaret also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, enjoyed dancing, arts and crafts, and watching game shows and sports of all kinds on television.

Her beloved husband of nearly 61 years, William I. Phelps, whom she married Nov. 28, 1946, passed away Oct. 15, 2007.

She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Walter I. (LaDonna) Phelps of Newton Falls and William P. Phelps of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Mary Ann (Rod) Waller of Youngstown; a grandson, Tyler Phelps; two step-grandchildren, Wesley and Julie Davis; three step-great-grandchildren, Haleigh Davis, Trent Roberto, and Jaslyn Davis; and two sisters, Jean Goist of Arizona and Betty Kraynak of Texas.

Besides her husband, Margaret was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Staudmeister; and a sister, Virginia Donaldson.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, where funeral services will follow at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in Margaret’s name to Trinity United Methodist Church, 30 W. Front St., Youngstown, 44503.

Margaret’s family thanks Dr. Charles Wilkins and Dr. David Hoffman, and the staff of St. Elizabeth Health Center, for the kindness shown and care given to Margaret and her family during her brief illness.
