Obituary for Doris J. Myers

Doris Jordan Myers

age 82, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014 at Laurels Of Massillon. She was born Sept. 7, 1931, in Huntsville, Ala., daughter of the late Alex Jordan and Viola (Milliner) Jordan. Doris graduated from Birmingham Baptist School of Nursing in 1952 and received her bachelor of science in health administration in 1984 from St. Joseph''''s College. Shortly after her graduation from nursing school, Doris moved to Ohio and began a career at the former Massillon City Hospital and continued at Joel Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg and Massillon Psychiatric Center. She served in a number of positions including staff nurse, head nurse, private duty and director of nursing service. She was a member of the Amerian Nurses'''' Association and American Hospital Association. Doris was a member of St. Pauls'''' Lutheran Church, Massillon Woman''''s Club, First Ladies Library and Massillon Senior Center where she led a senior exercise program for 10 years. She was active in mental health issues and volunteered with the Make-A-Way Center. In 1995, she was listed in Who''''s Who in American Nursing. She collected sewing machines and supplies for the prison ministry in Akron to teach women skills to prepare them for life after prison. Despite a busy life with her husband, five children and working full-time, Doris always made time for others by listening, advising, encouraging, standing by or offering hands- on help to find the best solution to whatever needs people had. Many people have benefited from her thoughtful, caring, friendly and gracious approach to life. Her life has been a perseverance of purpose that is to be admired. She continued to embody a caring sprit and commitment to the nursing profession. Even in retirement, her enthusiasm and dedication for all facets of nursing had never diminished.
Doris is survived by her husband of 61 years, Arvine H. Myers Jr.; sons, Arvine H. Myers III, Russell (Mary Sueltz), Eric (Carla) Myers, and Michael (Dody) Myers; daughter, Amy (John) Gleason; brother, Gerald Jordan; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 (TONIGHT) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Heitger Funeral Home - Massillon Chapel. Funeral service will be held on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 at St. Paul''''s Lutheran Church, 127 Cherry Rd. N.E., Massillon, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Dr. James L. Friesner officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.
