Obituary for James Slicker

James P. Slicker

age 91, of Massillon, passed away Monday, Feb. 17, 2014. James was born on June 6, 1922 in Massillon the son of the late Leo and Carrie (Ringleb) Slicker. He was a lifelong resident of Massillon and a 1941 graduate of Washington High School. Jim was a U.S. Navy veteran and served our country during World War II. He worked at the Timken Co., Griscom Russell Corp. and the Eaton Corp. as a Tool and Die maker. He later taught Machine Shop at Willoughby East Lake North School and then Washington High School until he retired in 1983. He was a member of St. Barbara''''s Catholic Church, K of C and the American Legion Post #221. Jim loved to boat and camp along the Ohio River and explore its boundaries. He was co-owner of Rocky Pine Campground at Salt Fork State Park. Jim loved landscaping, playing cards and dancing. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Catherine L. Slicker; his sister, Florence O''''Neil; and his brother, Edward Slicker. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Ann (Pettay) Slicker, whom he married on June 16, 1945; his son, Don (Marilyn) Slicker; his daughter, Dena (Gene Blankenship) DeVaughn; his grandchildren, Andrea (Mike) Thompson, Becky (Andy) Newman, Sarah (Shawn) Arbuckle and Dustin (Allyson) DeVaughn; his great-grandchildren, Madeline, Alaina, and Shirley; and his sisters, Mary Moll and Evelyn Graham. A special thank you to Merry Stokes for her dedication, compassion and care that she gave our dad. A gathering for family and friends will be held at St. Barbara''''s Catholic Church in the Parish Life and Banquet Center on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 at 1 p.m. A private service will be held at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens Chapel for immediate family.
