The Life of GEORGE FRANKLIN SMITH

George Smith, 80, passed away and went to be home with his wife Lulu on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at the Perry Lutheran Home. He was born on June 17, 1933 in Des Moines to Albert and Dorothy Smith.

George retired from John Deere after over 25 years of loyal service. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps and served in the Korean War. In 1981, George received the gift of life in the form of a kidney transplant from his brother Larry. George was a member of UAW Local 450 and enjoyed gardening, canning with Lulu, fishing and camping. He loved spending time with family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda (Randy) Heiken; granddaughter, Jennifer (Tyler) McIntosh; grandson, Jeff (Heather) Osborn; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Amanda and Grant McIntosh and Jade and Josie Osborn; 3 sisters; 1 brother; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Lulu; 5 siblings; and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines with burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, February 14, 2014 at the funeral home.
