The Life of Herman A Fister

Herman A. Fister, 82, Kutztown, retired cashier of the Farmers Bank of Kutztown and long-time treasurer of the Kutztown Fair Association, died last night in the Allentown Hospital. He was hospitalized after he became ill Monday in his home at 341 E. Main Street.

Fister was one of the organizers of the Farmers Bank and served as cashier from its opening in July 1909 until he retired on his 80th birthday Nov. 30, 1960. He remained active as a treasurer of the Fair Assn., a post he held for 48 years. For many years he was a trustee of Kutztown State College and for part of the time was president of its board of trustees.
He also helped organize the Kutztown high School and served as its first principal. Later he served a number of terms on the borough school board. A member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Kutztown, he was a former president of the Bankers Assn. Of Berks County and of the Kutztown Visiting Nurse Assn. And at the time of his death was treasurer of the Berks County Fersommling group, serving in that capacity for many years.
He was also a member of the Kutztown Rotary Club and of Masonic groups.

A native of Albany Township he was one of 14 children of the late Jacob and Mary Ann (Trexler) Fister.
He was a graduate of Kutztown Normal School, now KSC, in 1901 and like his father and six brothers, began his career as a school teacher. In addition to the post at Kutztown High, he taught at Greenwich, Maxatawny and Brecknock townships. His wife Clara (Delong) Fister, preceded him in death.

Surviving are a son, Dr. Frederick D. Fister, medical director of the Allentown Hospital; a daughter Gene, wife of Robert Nash,, Alburtis R. 1, a teacher in Southern Lehigh schools; two grandchildren, a brother,, James, Kutztown, and three sisters, Mable Fister, Kutztown; Mary Fister, Allenwood, and Mrs. Alice Young, Philadelphia.
Services will be held Saturday at 1:30 in St. Paul’s church. His pastor, Rev. Robert F. Harting, will officiate. Burial will be in the Hope cemetery at the direction of Keller Funeral home. Viewing will be at the church, Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service.
