The Life of ESTHER ELIZABETH SCHLENKER

Esther E. (Hale) Schlenker, 100, died Sunday, July 7, 2013, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. She was born July 18, 1912, to Charles and Eva (Tingley) Hale in Polk City. Esther was a member of the Pioneer Club, Farm Bureau, and Marquisville United Methodist Church, where she was a part of the Forever 39ers. Clarence and Esther owned and operated the Star-Lite Motel on NE 14th for 28 years. Esther was a past president of the Saydel PTA, a Cub Scout leader, and helped start the lunch program at Woodside School in the 1940s. She was a prolific bird watcher, enjoyed gardening, traveling, and canning and freezing fruits and vegetables. Esther loved fresh flowers and always had a window full of them. Esther is survived by her daughter, Joanne Andrews; son, Roger (Anita) Schlenker; and daughter-in-law, Marilyn (Bob) Barnes; grandchildren, Melodie (Chris) Gage, Wes (Laura) Schlenker, Brent Schlenker, Karl (Crystal) Schlenker, Blake (Betty) Andrews, Jill (Navin Mukraj) Andrews, and Shelly (Ken) Parkins; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Schlenker; son, Darwin Schlenker; son-in-law, Norm Andrews; and brother, Floyd Hale. A funeral service will be held 12 p.m., Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to Marquisville United Methodist Church.
