The Life of JOHN PAUL QUEENER

John Paul Queener, 88, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013, after a 30-year battle with cancer. He was born August 24, 1924, to Andrew and Anna Queener in Virginia. John graduated from Knoxville High School and married his high school sweetheart while she was still a senior, before he left to serve in the US Army during WWII. He farmed for many years in the Knoxville and Jefferson area before settling in Des Moines with his family. John retired from John Deere as a machinist. John enjoyed golfing and bowling. He was an avid gardener and spent many an afternoon in his flower bed. John is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy; children, Dave (Janice) Queener and Mary Rumbaugh; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; special nephew, Jim (Janne) Nelson; brothers, Bobby, Chucky, and Rich (Jan) Queener; and sisters, Barbara, Opal, and Ila Mae. He was preceded in death by his parents; great-granddaughter, Autumn Queener; son-in-law, Melvin Rumbaugh; sisters, Helen, MaryLou, and Jackie; and two infant brothers. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 31, 2013, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Family will greet friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
