Virginia Howland, 84, of Des Moines, died Tuesday, February 12, of lung cancer at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.

Family and friends are invited to share memories, anecdotes, comments and photos on an online memorial page: ginnyspage.wordpress.com

Born in Des Moines on December 11, 1928, Virginia attended Roosevelt High School, graduating in January 1947.  She worked for three and a half years as a secretary for the Iowa Engineering Society before her marriage in 1950 to Richard Howland, also of Des Moines.

From 1950 through 1957, Virginia and Richard lived in Oskaloosa, Iowa; Kewanee, IL; Clinton, IA and Englewood, CO.  In 1957 the returned to Des Moines permanently to make a home for their growing family.

Virginia is survived by her husband Richard, her brother Robert Dallner (Nancy) of Mesa, AR; son Tom of Des Moines; daughters Terri Dobitz (John) of Broomfield, CO, and Ann (Don Kalsem, boyfriend) of West Des Moines; plus four grandchildren, one great-grandson and two step-grandchildren.

Virginia was laid to rest at a quiet graveside service Friday, February 15, at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines, joining her son Teddy Howland and her parents Dale and Pearl (Johnson) Dallner.

Virginia was an avid reader and talented cake decorator.  She sewed beautifully, making clothes, purses, bedspreads, pillows and draperies.  She liked jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles and word games.  She always kept the dictionary close by.  She kept a low profile and disliked attention but was more than happy to shower it upon her children, grandchildren, friends and other family members.  She was a master at the lsot art of listening and could talk to anyone and make him or her feel instantly comfortable.

She was a woman who taught by example, honored her commitments, and cherished her family.  She was deeply loved and appreciated and will be missed terribly.
