The Life of VERA PEARL MONOHON

Vera Pearl (White) Monohon, 94, was born October 18, 1917, the second child of Robert and Viola Pearl White in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She and her sister, Velda were accomplished pianists, taught by their mother and they often played recitals for their church. Her father’s work brought the family to Des Moines where Vera graduated from East High School. In 1939, she married Harold Monohon. They lived for short periods in Washington and North Dakota, but Des Moines was their home for the majority of their 57-year marriage where they were members of Bloomfield United Methodist Church. Throughout her life, Vera worked at Bankers Trust, the Post Office, and spent 10 years at the courtesy counter with Dahl’s Foods. However, her primary focus was always her family. Vera was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt. She was a gentle woman with great strengths of love and character. At age 89, Vera moved into assisted living – first in Des Moines, and later in Lenexa, KS. Vera left us on Friday, September 21, 2012, after a short stay at Hospice House of Kansas City, MO. Vera will always be remembered with love and affection by the many people whose lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her two brothers and three sisters, husband Harold, and daughter Linda. Left to remember our sweet little lady are her children Karen (Steve) Middlesworth of Lenexa, KS, sons Mike (Penny) Monohon of Indianola, IA, and Patrick of Naples, FL, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon, on Monday, September 24, at 1:00 p.m., directly followed by the funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Bloomfield United Methodist Church.
