The Life of DELBERT E MACDONALD

Delbert “Mac” E. MacDonald, 88, passed away June 25, 2012 at Mercy Hospital. Mac was born August 26, 1923, in Des Moines to R.V. and Harriet (Collins) MacDonald. He graduated from North High School in 1941. Mac served in the Signal Corps during WWII. He enjoyed talking about the other members of the Signal Corps, and his time in Hawaii. After attending night classes for 10 years, Mac received a BA degree from Drake University in 1972. On August 28, 1964, he was united in marriage to Dorothy E. Nesler. The made their home in the Highland Park area.

Mac and Dorothy “Dottie” enjoyed doing activities together. Mac was employed at Iowa Power and Light Company working in the draft division becoming a supervisor; Skelly Oil company, again as a draftsman; and Iowa State Commerce in the drafting and administration section before retiring in 1988. He was most proud of his many years of work in the Boy Scouts of America. Mac became a Scout in 1935, and never stopped. He was working as a volunteer in the Scout office until April 2012. Over the years he introduced many young men to the beauty of the outdoors, and camping. Friendships were created and exist today. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in recognition of over 25 years of service to the organization. He was active in the Highland Park Christian Church.

He is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 48 years; on sister-in-law, Evelyn Nesler of Des Moines. He is further survived by nieces, nephews; great and great-great nieces and nephews and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Allen and brother, Larry.

Memorials are directed to Highland Park Christian Church or to Mid-Iowa council, Boy Scout of America.
