The Life of JOE WAYNE MULLINS

Joe Wayne Mullins, 73 of Middletown, NJ passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2012 , at home following a courageous fight against brain cancer. Joe was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Oral and Velma Mullins on July 30, 1938. Joe was a 1956 graduate of Des Moines, Tech High School. While at Tech, he was an outstanding wrestler earning himself the title of All City Champion as well as a position on the All City Football Team. Joe also earned himself a wrestling scholarship to the University of Iowa where he was a 3 year Varsity Wrestler and Captain of the Wrestling team. In 1962 Joe moved to New Jersey where he was an electrical engineer specializing in Satellite Communications. During his career, Joe worked for the Department of Defense, NATO and most recently MITRE Corporation. During his employment with MITRE, Joe led a search and rescue team into Ground Zero at the 9/11 site in New York City. Joe was an all round athlete. He enjoyed golfing, skiing and hiking with his Family and friends. Joe was preceded in death by his parents Oral and Velma Mullins; and son, Steven Mullins. Joe is survived by his wife, Toni Citarella Mullins of Middletown, New Jersey; his children Scott Mullins of Dubuque, Iowa, Jeffrey (Shannon) Mullins of Urbandale, Iowa, Kelly Mullins (Chris Hoyt) of Parker, Colorado and Karen Walsh of Freehold, New Jersey; four grandchildren August Mullins, Steven Mullins, Evan and Drew Walsh; one brother George Mullins (Mildred); and two sisters-in-law, Patricia Citarella and Joan Gavornik. Graveside services will be at 1pm, Monday June 11, 2012 at Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines, Iowa.
