The Life of JENNIE A HOPKINS JENKINS

Jennie was born February 14, 1924, to J. Everett and Bina Vida Hughes, in Mapleton, Kansas. She was one of three children, having two brothers, Holly (deceased) and Glen (deceased). The family would later move to Southern Iowa, where Jennie attended school and met Harold Don Hopkins (deceased). They married when Jennie was 19 in St. Joseph, Missouri, and settled in Des Moines. They were married 34 years and raised 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Jennie was widowed in 1977 at the young age of 53, and was blessed to find love a second time and marry John Jenkins, and celebrate nearly 30 years together. Jennie’s working life spanned several careers and decades including working at the downtown Des Moines Younkers store for three decades and finally owning her own business, JJ’s Gateway Café. John and Jennie would run JJ’s for 25 years. The café was Jennie’s great passion over those years until 2004, when she suffered a stroke and spent her last years in the care of others. Jennie was a resident of Fountain West Health Care facility until her death on March 7, 2012. She is survived by her husband John Jenkins and four daughters Linda Sue, Shirley Curtis, Carolyn Jensen, and Vicki Everett. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, March 13, 2012, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; henceforth there Is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8
