The Life of VERDA MAE SWIM

Verda passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at Taylor House Hospice, at the age of 97 years.

Verda was born on December 23, 1914, in Estherville, IA, to Arleigh and Lorena M. (Case) Ferguson. The family moved to Vinton, IA, and then to Des Moines. She graduated from North High School in 1934. She married Donald I. Swim in June of 1938, and was married for 54 years, when Don passed away in 1992.

Verda worked many years as a switchboard operator. Among the businesses she worked for were, Corn States Hybrid, US Government at Fort Des Moines, AE Dairy, Iowa Paint, and retired from the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a 50-year member of East Gate Chapter of the Eastern Star of Iowa. Verda spent several years as Rainbow Mother in the East Gate Chapter of Rainbow girls.

Verda enjoyed attending all of her children’s, grandchildren’s, and her great-granchildren’s sporting and other activities throughout the years; they were the light of her life. She liked to read, sew and visit with her friends.

Verda was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, James Ferguson and Ernest Ferguson; sisters, Bernita Mills, Eileen Porter and Virginia Cason; and her husband, Don.

She is survived by her son, Donald “Mickey” and wife, Sharon Swim; daughter, Linda and husband, Lanny Shultice; grandchildren, Mike and Lori Swim of McKinney, TX; Shelly and Bryan Cook of Layton, UT; Don and Traci Shultice of Ankeny, IA; Doug and Laura Shultice of West Des Moines, IA; great-grandchildren, Amber Swim, Kent Washington, Alex Swim – US Army, Chase, Jennifer, Mikie and Emily Swim of McKinney, TX; Rilyn and Chase Cook of Layton, UT; Tessa, Alexis, Kaitlin and Collin Shultice of Ankeny, IA; and Cade and Anna Shultice of West Des Moines, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

Vistiation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, January 7, 2012, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, with a graveside service to follow at 12 p.m., at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Taylor House Hospice or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in loving memory of Verda.
