The Life of Pauline Schmitz

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 23, 2007 in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Pauline ''Polly'' Schmitz who died peacefully Monday evening at the age of 90 at her home in Destin, Florida with her loving family at her side. Memorial services were held at Destin United Methodist Church at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, June 20, 2007.
Reverend Ken Taylor will conduct the funeral services. Also present will be Father Don Kellner. Musical selections performed by Shawn Roy will be ''How Great Thou Art'', ''I Wish You Love'', ''Ave Maria'', ''Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi'' and ''Amazing Grace''. Prior to the services, The Voice of Vermilion Chorus of Sweet Adeline''s International will be performing ''What Friends Are For''.
Interment will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park. She will be laid to rest beside her husband, Bill and sons, Frank and Nubby.
Ms. Schmitz was born in Mansfield, Illinois on August 28, 1916. She graduated from Burnham City Hospital School of Nursing in Champaign, Illinois. It was there she met and married her college sweetheart, Wm. "Bill" Schmitz, a student at the University of Illinois who was studying geology. After their graduations, they moved to Beaumont, Texas then to Lafayette, Louisiana where they lived and raised their family for more than 40 years. After vacationing in Destin, Florida for many years, she fell in love with this small fishing village and decided to make it their permanent home 28 years ago.
Polly was Patroness and Advisor of Sigma Alpha Iota and Chi Omega, Charter member of the Rehabilitation Center, Lafayette Cripple Children Assoc and other civic organizations while living in Lafayette. In Destin, Polly was a beloved member of the Destin United Methodist church.
One of Polly''s favorites: "To see the world in a grain of sand and a heaven in a wildflower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour". Polly leaves memories beyond measure with those of us who love her.
Survivors include her son, Van "Will" Schmitz of Deming New Mexico; daughters-in-law, Minnie Boulet Schmitz of Destin and MJ "Chubby" Schmitz Lette of Lafayette; grandchildren, Chuck Schmitz and wife, Tracy of Plano, Texas, Andy Schmitz and wife, Mechelle of Lafayette, Lori Schmitz Janowski and her husband, David of Destin, Anna Schmitz and Tom Schmitz of Destin; four great grandchildren, Drew Schmitz of Plano, Texas, Tommy and Andrea Reid of Destin, and Lauren Ardoin of Lafayette.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill of 53 years; her son''s Frank and Charles "Nubby"; parents, Mollie and Adali; and brother, Otto VanGorder.
The family requests that visitation be observed Friday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm and continue Saturday from 9:00 am until time of service.
Pallbearers will be Will, Chuck, Andy, Tom and Drew Schmitz, Tommy Reid, Russell Colomb and Damien Isom-Brandon. Honorary pallbearers will be Pete Klentos, Kearney Leger and Bob Drobish.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the Destin United Methodist Church (850-837-2984),200 Beach Drive, Destin, Florida 32541.
Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette, is in charge of all funeral arrangements
