The Life of Marie W Hammett

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Marie Wilson Hammett, 87, who passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Friday, November 28, 2008. The Reverend Charles Langford, former Associate Pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church of Lafayette and current Pastor of University United Methodist Church of Lake Charles, will officiate. Interment will be held in Lafayette Memorial Park. Mrs. Marie Hammett was a longtime resident of Lafayette. She was born Jessie Marie Wilson on May 26, 1921, in Snyder, Texas. In 1926, her family moved to Abilene and her fond childhood memories there include long country drives in her father’s Model T and the many activities that she participated in at her family’s Methodist Church. After graduating high school, Mrs. Hammett moved to Fort Worth where she worked as a timekeeper at a factory which produced military aircraft during World War II. In 1950, she met her husband at a Texas A&M Aggie Muster, and the two eloped and married in Lovington, New Mexico. Shortly after their wedding, the couple moved to South Louisiana where Mrs. Hammett’s husband was an oilfield engineer. After several years of doing the “Highway 90 Shuffle” that so many oilfield families did during the oil heyday, Mrs. Hammett and her family finally settled in Lafayette. For 15 years, Mrs. Hammett was the office manager at Van Eaton & Romero Realty. She retired in 1984, but never slowed down. She spent many years volunteering in the clothes closet and at the receptionists desk at Asbury United Methodist Church in Lafayette. In early 2007, Mrs. Hammett moved to Baton Rouge to be closer to her family. She is survived by her son, The Reverend Michael L. Hammett of Baton Rouge; her daughter-in-law, The Reverend Kim Havard Hammett of St. Amant; her grandson, Jonathan M. Hammett of Berkeley, California; and her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Sarah and Strother Sacra of Walker. She is also survived by her niece Betty Blackwell Hoffman of Wheat Ridge, Colorado; her nephew John Blackwell of Abilene, Texas; and her nephew David Bowlin of Bastrop, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Drayton Hammett; her parents, Jesse Franklin Wilson and Agnes Alberta Dillard Wilson; her siblings, Alfred Eugene “Ace” Wilson, Clifton Earl Wilson, Viola Christelle Bowlin, and Rosa Pearl “Posie” Blackwell; and her half siblings, Albert Wilson and Bertie Lee Phillips. The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Tuesday from 9:30 am until the time of service at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be sent to Asbury United Methodist Church, 101 Live Oak Boulevard, Lafayette, Louisiana 70503 or First United Methodist Church, 930 North Boulevard, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802. This request is made in honor of Mrs. Hammett’s lifelong commitment to the United Methodist Church and its ministries. Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette, is in charge of all funeral arrangements.
