The Life of Maggie Ruth Mackey

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at a 2:00 PM Service in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille for Maggie Ruth Morgan Mackey, 94, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at Lafayette General Medical Center.Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.Reverend Ann Sutton of Asbury United Methodist Church will officiate the services. Musical selections will be "On Eagles'' Wings", "How Great Thou Art", "Amazing Grace" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee".She is survived by her daughter, Paula M. Shaffer of Metairie; her son, Michael P. Mackey of Baton Rouge; one brother Bill Morgan of Lafayette; one sister, Eulene M. Adkins of Dallas, Texas; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Paul W. Mackey; one daughter, Margaret M. Marcel; her mother, Rosa Armour Morgan; her father, O.C. Morgan; six brothers; and three sisters.Maggie was born on September 6, 1913 in Shongaloo, Louisiana. As one of twelve children growing up on a farm, basketball became one of her favorite pastimes. After high school she won a basketball scholarship to a business school and played on an independent team in Shreveport. She participated in four National AAU tournaments (1933-1936) and in 1934, was named to the All-American team as a guard. It was during these travels that she met the love of her life, her husband, Paul.Over the past 46 years Maggie resided in Lafayette and gave willingly of her time and talents. She served as a Pink Lady at Lafayette General beginning in 1975 and was honored as one of their Pink Ladies of the Year. While living in New Orleans, Maggie also volunteered her time at the Crippled Children''s Center. She cared for many a friend in need, supplying companionship and heartwarming meals. She was an avid bridge player and an excellent cook. Because of her outgoing personality and her genuine concern for others, she had many wonderful friends.
