Virginia Baker (1924 - 2011)
LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at 11:00 AM in First Baptist Church in Lafayette, for Virginia Baker, 87, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Lafayette General Medical Center in Lafayette. Doctor Steve Horn, Pastor of First Baptist Church in Lafayette, will conduct the funeral services. Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 66 years, Larry Baker, Sr. of Maurice; two sons, Larry Baker, Jr. and his wife Sandra of Portland, TX and Russell Dean Baker, Sr. of Broussard; five grandchildren, Karrie Cox and her husband, Marty, Larry Baker III and his wife, Jennifer, Rusty Baker, John Baker and his wife, Anna, and Amy Brown and her husband, Blair; five great grandchildren, Brant Cox, Baker Cox, Taylor Baker, Kaylin Baker and Jordan Baker; five sisters, Marjorie Lynn Wohlar of Beaumont, TX, Bobbie Jay Dorman and her husband Kenneth of Mauriceville, TX, Emma Dale Nelms of Vidor, TX, Eddie Jean Stephenson of Orange, TX and Patsy Dean Sanderson and her husband Glenn of Orange, TX; and one brother, Cleo Coulter and his wife, Ethel of Sulphur, LA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cleo and Ima Dean Coulter; and three brothers, Winfred Childress Coulter, Randall Leo Coulter and Jimmy Morris Coulter.
Virginia Baker was born in the Sand Hill Community in Gilmer, TX on September 11, 1924. She attended Sand Hill Grammar School, graduated as Valedictorian from Indian Rock High School and graduated from business school in Dallas. She was the first of ten children and was the apple of her daddy's eye until he died. He loved her with an uncommon love. She grew up with her Uncle Earl, Uncle Benny and Uncle Shepherd, who tormented Virginia every chance they had and with her Aunt Doris, who would tattle tale on Virginia all the time.
Virginia traveled the world throughout her entire adult life and well after her retirement from Baker Marine as comptroller for twenty-five years. She was a bird watcher and grew roses, having served as President of the Acadiana Rose Society. She loved watching her grandchildren grow up and enjoyed having family and friends close to her. Virginia gave her life to the Lord in March of 1947 at the First Baptist Church in Orange, Texas. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Lafayette and will be dearly missed by her family, friends and all who knew and loved her.
Pallbearers will be Larry Baker III, Rusty Baker, John Baker, Brant Cox, Baker Cox, Mahlon Butler, Glenn Stephenson, Rickie Williams and Bryan Spallino.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the First Baptist Day Break Class and The Acadiana Rose Society.
The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN Lafayette location on Monday, January 2, 2012 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and will continue on Tuesday in First Baptist Church in Lafayette from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at Lafayette General Medical Center, most especially the ICU staff for their outstanding care and professionalism during Virginia's last days and would like to thank all of the friends and family for the outpouring of love, care and support.
