The Life of Lydia Bacque

View Memorial Tribute Lydia Aponte Bacqué passed away on October 27, 2007, at home surrounded by her family. Lydia was a loving and loved mother and grandmother. Lydia was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico on December 6, 1920 to Rafael Aponte Lopez and Marta Martinez Aponte. She attended Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, PA, earning a BS in Chemistry in 1942. After graduating, she returned to Puerto Rico and worked for the War Department, applying her chemistry degree in chemical censorship. It was then that she met her future husband. She married Odon Lessley Bacqué in 1943 and moved to Lafayette. She was a lab instructor in the Chemistry Department at the University of Southwestern Louisiana from 1965 to 1986, touching the lives of hundreds of students. She was active in the Lafayette community as a member of the Altrusa Club, a Docent at the Academy of the Sacred Heart where her granddaughters attended school, and volunteered as a Pink Lady at Lafayette General Hospital from 1986 to the present. She also served as President of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary from 1992 to 1994.Lydia loved Mardi Gras. She was a member of the Order of the Troubadours where she served on several committees and the Krewe of Attakapas where she reigned as Attakapas Queen Karakondye XXVIII in 1996.Lydia's love of traveling with family and friends and playing bridge was only surpassed by her love of God and the Church. She is survived by her sister Aida Gonzalez and brother José Aponte; three sons and their wives, Odon L. Bacqué, Jr. and Cookie, Dr. Frank R. Bacqué and Miki and William J. Bacqué and Stephanie; eight grandchildren, Leslie Bacqué Smith and Trent Smith, Emily Bacqué, Justin Bacqué, Nicholas Bacqué, Joel Bacqué and Melanie, Maximillian Bacqué, Alexandre Bacqué and Samuel Bacqué; and her beloved Labrador, Winnie.She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Carmen Quiñones Aponte, her husband and a son, Jean Louis Bacqué. Visitation will be held at Monday, October 29, 2007 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Tuesday from 8:00 AM until the time of services.A Rosary will be prayed Monday at 7:00 PM in the Martin & Castille Funeral Home.A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at 10:00 AM in Holy Cross Catholic Church. Reverend Howard Blessing, celebrant and Reverend Chester Arceneaux and Reverend Monsignor Harry E. Benefiel, con-celebrants, will conduct the services. Musical selections for the Funeral Mass will be "Just A Closer Walk With Thee", "Lord, When You Came", "You Are Mine", "Be Not Afraid" and "Angel Band". Vocalists will be Jodi M. Bollich, Juan Carlos Pagan and Anne Bacqué Darrah accompanied on the cello by Mark Pritchard, piano by Patricia Pritchard, trumpet by Wil Green, violin by Lauren Baker, guitar by Juan Carlos Pagan, organ by Dexter Thibodeaux, and on dobro by Curtis Darrah. Lectors will be Mrs. Bacqué's sons, William J. Bacqué, Frank R. Bacqué, M.D. and Odon L. Bacqué, Jr. Homilist will be Reverend Howard J. Blessing and the Eulogists will be Mrs. Bacqué's grandchildren. Giftbearers will be Leslie B. Smith, Emily Bacqué, Allie Bacqué and Melanie Bacqué.Interment will be at Lafayette Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lydia Bacqué Scholarship Fund at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Foundation, P.O.
