The Life of Cathleen Pinckney Backus
Cathleen Backus, age 89, wife of the late Cleveland Backus and resident of New Haven, entered into eternal rest October 4. She was born November 15, 1921 in Somersville, South Carolina, daughter of the late Aldrich & Allean Brown Pinckney. A former Ansonia resident, Cathleen worked as a nurses’ aid for V.N.A. of New Haven until retiring in 1985. She leaves to cherish her memory her 2 sons, Sherman Backus of Meriden & Bryant Backus of Philadelphia, PA and 2 daughters, Vivian Smalls of Ladson, S.C. & Mary Alice Bruce of Darlington, S.C., 18 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Gloria Jean Backus Saunders, her sons, Clarence & Cleveland Backus & Sydney Pinckney, sister Ernestine Johnson & brother Noah Pinckney. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, 10:00 a.m. from The Williams Memorial Church (C.O.G.I.C.) on Bishop Williams Drive in Ansonia. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at church, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. before the service. Friends who wish may make donations to CT Hospice of Branford.
