The Life of LEONARD PAUL ALMS

Leonard Paul Alms, son of Heinrich Fredrick Alms and Wilhemine Emma (Junge) Alms was born January 24, 1921 in York County, Nebraska and passed from this life September 6, 2011 in Osceola, Iowa at 90 years of age. Leonard graduated from high school in Malcolm, Nebraska, and attended one year of college for a trade certificate in welding. He farmed in Iowa from 1939-1942, before enlisting in the Coast Guard where he served for four years as a Motor Machinist's Mate, First Class, during World War II. After the war, he worked as a welder at Solar Aircraft and Capital City Boiler. He was united in marriage to Floybelle "Mer" Redden on July 16, 1955 at Des Moines, Iowa. They moved near Osceola to farm in 1961 Leonard retired in 1983 and moved to town in 1991. Leonard was a member of American Legion Post #69, the Republican Party, Osceola United Methodist Church, Farm Bureau, International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local 83, and served on the Clarke County election board. He loved farming and his Black Angus cattle, was an expert craftsman of metal and wood, a dedicated Iowa Hawkeye fan, an avid bird watcher and gardener. He deeply enjoyed spending time with his family and friends over coffee. Those relatives who preceded Leonard in death were his parents; brother, Ray Alms; sister, Ester Alms; and grandsons, Lee Olson and Jerade Redden. He leaves to cherish his memory; his wife, "Mer" Alms of Osceola; brother, Vern Alms of Johnston, stepchildren, Nancy Olson of Osceola and Terry Redden of Des Moines who he raised as his own; grandchildren, Lex (Katie) Olson of Visalia, CA, Jerome Redden, Jermane Redden and Jake (Brandi) Redden, all of Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Arlo, Flyn & Greer Olson, Kaitlyn and Shyna Redden; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Memorials: Memorial contributions may be directed to American Red Cross or Easter Seals. Visitation: Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. on Sunday until service time. Service: Memorial services will be 2:30 P.M. Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, Iowa. Cemetery: Interment of cremains will be at Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines, Iowa at a later date.
