The Life of RICHARD D DOUD

Richard D. Doud, 82, died on August 2, 2004 at Mercy Hospital.

Richard was born July 2, 1922 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Maude (Barrett) DeWitt, Sr.  As an infant, he assumed the surname of his stepfather, William T. Doud.  After growing up in the Iowa Soldiers Orphan''s Home, he joined the U.S. Navy, March 24, 1942, where he served until December 9, 1946.  He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves December 10, 1946 and served until he reenlisted for active service to the U.S. Navy, February 6, 1950 and served in the Korean war.

He married Juanita Higdon Safarik on April 14, 1960 in Grant City, Missouri.  He worked for Weitz Co., Inc. and then the West Des Moines Public Schools, which he retired from in 1984.

He enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time with his family, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita; daughters, Cheryl of Des Moines and Michele (Mike) Bowers of Waukee; grandchildren, Michael, Chelsea and Morgan Cook; and sister, Francis LeMay of Nebraska.
