The Life of WALTER LEE JOHANNSEN

Walter Lee "Brub" Johannsen, 72, died peacefully surrounded by his family at Taylor House June 24 following a battle with ALS.

Walter was born in LaPorte City, IA  December 5, 1933 and moved to Des Moines in 4th Grade.  He was a 1951 graduate of East High School.  Walt worked 45 years with US West in cable maintenance.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter L. and Ruth V. Johannsen.

Walt was recognized as an 18-gallon donor with The Blood Center of Iowa.  He was a member of the American Bowling Congress, US West Pioneer Club, and Grand View Lutheran Church, where he served as a council member and vice president.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Trellis (Nichols) Johannsen; a son, Thomas Johannsen (Nancy) of Altoona; daughter, Caryl Wiley (Leigh) of River Falls, WI; Kay Miller (Richard) of Carlisle; sister, Diana Lingenfelter (John) of Kingman, AZ; sister-in-law, Cathy Sharron of Colorado Springs; six grandchildren and a great-grandson.

He loved his dogs, bowling, gardening, being outdoors, building projects for family and church, traveling and spending time with his family.

Visitation at 10 a.m. followed by services at 11 a.m., Wednesday at Grandview Lutheran Church, E 13th and Hull Ave.  Memorial gifts may be made to the family.
