The Life of CARL ARTHUR GOMEZ

Carl Arthur "Smiley" Gomez, 83, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at Calvin Community.  Funeral services will be 12 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2005 at Hamilton''s Near Highland Memory Gardens Funeral Home in Des Moines, with burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Carl was born July 16, 1922 in Iowa City, IA.  He retired as a truck driver from Mid American Truck Lines in 1980.  He also served in the US Army during WWII, the US Marines following WWII, and served in the Korean Conflict and Marine Reserves until 1958.  He was a member of Baldwin Patterson Post 274, the National Association of the 6th Infintry Division, AARP, and a member of Teamsters Retiree Chapter 147.

His family was his number one priority.  He loved camping, fishing, and tinkering in his garage.  Everyone will miss his smile.

His is survived by his wife, Virginia Gomez of Des Moines; daughters, Carol Bemisdarfer (Bill) of Des Moines, Shirley Miner (Dennis) of Ankeny, and Diane Canady (Larry) of Des Moines; brothers, Joe Gomez of Georgia and Johnny Gomez of Stuart, Iowa; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Carl will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamilton''s Near Highland Memory Gardens.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Calvin Community Good Samaritan Fund or the Alzheimer''s Association.
