The Life of VIRGIL JACKSON THARP

Virgil J Tharp, 78, of the 1200 block of Burnham Avenue died Wednesday of pneumonia at Mercy Medical Center. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton''s Near Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Tharp ws born in New Virginia and had lived in Des Moines most of his life. He was a retired self-employed barber and an Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; a daughter, Carla Freel and two sons, Brent and Kent, all of Des Moines; three sisters, Hazel Dye of Dallas Center, Iris Kono of Newton and Inez Wilcox of Adel; a brother Ivan of Waukee; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation or St. Jude''s Hospital for cancer research.
