The Life of EMILY GUSTAFSON

Emily Gustafson was born in Smaland Sweden, on October 9, 1885. She imigrated to America when she was around 20 years of age, following one older brother, Walter and settled, as he did, in the Des Moines area.

Her given name in Sweden was Helga Emilia Johansdotter, but after arriving in America she took her father''s (Gustave Johanson) first name and became known as Emily Gustafson.

In Des Moines she worked as a domestic servant. She met Andrew Gustafson, another immigrant from Sweden, and they were married on March 31, 1909. Emily was a housewife. She had three children, a daughter, Helen, a son who died at birth, and another daughter, Mildred.

She was a beloved, gentle woman of small stature, but with a heart full of laughter, hard work and love. She was a member of Union Park Baptist Church. She passed away on December 10, 1957.

She was survived by her husband, Andrew, and two daughters, Helen Lewis, of Forest City, Iowa, and Mildred Gustafson, of Des Moines, and two grandchildren.
