The Life of DONALD EDNELL KNOX JR

Donald Ednell Knox, Jr., a retired assistant Des Moines police chief, died of cancer Wednesday at home.  He was 68.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church, of which he was a member.  Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Officer Knox lived all his life in Des Moines, most recently at 1444 King Ave.  He was a member of the city''s first police academy graduating class in 1951, and he retired as assistant chief in 1992.  He was an Army veteran of the Korean War,  former president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and a member of Eastgate Masonic Lodge and Iowa State Policeman''s Association. 

Survivors include his wife, Pat; a son, Don III of Des Moines; a daughter, Cynthia Burton of Herndon, VA; two sisters, Winnie Persinger and Sandra Jacobs, both of Des Moines; a brother, Robert of Waterloo; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Southtown Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 3 to 7 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or his church.>>
