The Life of ELBERT E REED

Elbert Reed, 88, passed away from complications of pneumonia on Thursday, February 28, 2008 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.  Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2008 at Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Blvd., Clive, Iowa.  Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Church of the Nazarene, 4703 Douglas Ave., of which he was a faithful member since moving to Des Moines in 1944.

Mr. Reed was born on November 22, 1919 in LaHarpe, IL.  He was manager of maintenance engineering for 20 of the 26 years he worked for Look Magazine.  After that, he worked for ten years as a repairman for Dial Finance before retiring in 1982.  Mr.Reed''s love for fixing things started early in life.  He spent several years volunteerig for the Easter Seal Society of Iowa.  He also volunteered to fix machines for First Church and fixed equipment for other churches at a reduced fee.  He also helped by serving as a church bus driver, board member, Sunday school teacher and was Des Moines Register Neighbor of the Week in July of 1984.

Mr. Reed is survived by his son, Ken (Joy) Reed of Warrington, PA; daughter, Barbie (Chet) Chester of Missouri Valley, IA; twelve grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; sisters, Edna Wertz of McClave, CO and Ruth Haldeman of Dallas Center; brothers, William of Quinter, KS, and Oty of Montrose, CO.  He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary; wife, Janalee; brothers, Kyle, Lloyd, Millard, John and Ray; sister, Fae Kasza.  He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to his church.
