The Life of HARRIETT MABEL TERRY

Mabel Terry, 98, passed away on Thursday, September 16 at Westview Care Center in Indianola, where she had been a resident since 1993.  Following cremation, graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 20, 2004 at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.  A reception will follow immediately at Hamilton''s Near Highland Memory Gardens Funeral Home.

Mabel was born February 24, 1906 on a family farm near Kelley, IA to Albert and Hattie (Spratford) Miller.  She was a graduate of Kelley High School and Normal Training School and taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Napier, IA.  She later graduated from 4-C College in Des Moines.

On April 6, 1935 she married Ralph Terry, eloping to Grant City, MO.  They then made their home in Des Moines.  Mabel was a 50-year plus member of Union Park Christian Church and the Help Hand Club, both in Des Moines.  She worked in the family businesses, Capitol City Water and later Capitol Printing Company, while raising four children.

Mabel was a very talented oil painter and an avid reader.  She enjoyed her flower garden and visiting elderly shut-ins.  The joy in her life were her ten grandchildren, all of whom adored her.  She was a fun grandmother who always had time, patience and love to give.

Mable is survived by ther three daughters, JoAnn Landers of Altoona, Mary Iliff of Waukee, and Dolores Hoover of Indianola; ten grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph in 1980; her son, Richard in 1993; her brothers, Henry and Albert; and her sisters, Alyis Miller and Zella Robinson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Park Christian Church, East 9th and Grandview in Des Moines.  Hamilton''s Near Highland Memory Gardens Funeral Home in Des Moines is handling arrangements.
