The Life of JOHN NEWTON SKINNER

John N. Skinner, age 92, passed away on Monday, April 26, 2010, in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at 10 am at Capitol Hill Christian Church, 3322 East 25th Street, Des Moines, with burial following at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm on Wednesday, April 28 at the church. John was born April 18, 1918, in Des Moines to Ira and Vinnie (Parmenter) Skinner. He was a member of Capitol Hill Christian Church. He served in the US Navy during WWII, and was an automobile salesman for over 30 years. He was known as “Mr. East High” and was a very active member of the EHS Alumni Association, a past member of the Pride of Iowa Barbershop Chorus, the Des Moines Area Religious Council, and leader of the “Saturday Lunch Bunch”. John is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Nadine (Wade) Skinner; sons, Tom (Marilee) Skinner, Jim (Maria) Skinner; daughters, Mary (Bob) Engdahl, Janean (Lary) Lasswell, and Virginia (Shawn) Constable; 15 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; a sister, Shirley (Al) Czyzewski, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bob, Paul, Ira Jr.; sisters, Dorothy, Virginia, Bonnie, Betty and Ruth; and his son, Perry. John’s gift of conversation and positive outlook endeared him to all; he will be dearly missed.
