The Life of JOHN LOWELL GILCHRIST

John L. Gilchrist took his final journey surrounded by his loving family and passed away peacefully at home Sunday, November 15, 2009. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 18 at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel with a private family burial at Highland Memory Gardens at a later date. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home where family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. John was born May 23, 1928 in Ayrshire, IA. He was one of 16 children born to James C. and Arrah V. Gilchrist. He served during the Korean War from May 1950 to November 1952. After serving his country in the U.S. Air Force, he returned to Iowa and worked at Des Moines Flying Service from 1957 to 1968. He purchased Dean Studios in 1968, and was an active Des Moines businessman until retiring in 1990. John lived an exhilarating life full of world travel and exciting adventures. He never lost a poker game, and thrived on hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Berbel; daughters, Stephanie, Julie, Janet; son, Gary; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; and many loving family members and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and four brothers. The family would like to thank the angels of hospice for their wonderful care and support of our loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Memorials may be directed to the Christians Children's Fund or Iowa Health Hospice.
