The Life of CHARLES E BACKSTROM SR.

C.E. Backstrom Sr., 76, of Des Moines died on August 10, 2007 at the Hospice Kavanagh on 56th from congestive heart failure. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with burial following at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5-8 P.M. Monday evening at the funeral home. Chuck was a navy veteran of the Korean War and started his career with the Des Moines Police Department on river patrol and then as a patrolman. He then went on to work as a detective with the vice department and soon after was promoted to sergeant. He was involved with the Police Community Relations and the Administrative Bureau and retired in 1987 at the rank of Captain. He was a member of the I.S.P.A., the A.A.C.P.P.O., was very active in the Policeman Burial Association and putting together the Annual Policeman’s Ball books. He is survived by his sons Chuck Jr. (Jill) and Mike (Linda), his grandchildren Bobby, Chuck III, Courtney, Christopher, Caleb and Nathan as well as 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Mary Backstrom, his wife Deloris and siblings Patty Howe, Norman and Dick Backstrom. Memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa Policeman’s Burial Association or Hospice of Central Iowa. Chuck and his family would like to send a special thank you to Hospice of Central Iowa and the staff at Kavanagh on 56th.
