The Life of FRANK EDWARD CALHOUN

Frank E. Calhoun, 89, was born in Fairfield, Iowa to Claude and Florence Calhoun (Jimmy Heiden). He graduated from Birmingham High School, received his teaching certificate from Parsons College in Fairfield, and received his Masters Degree from Drake University. He was an Army Medic in World War II and served three years in Africa and Italy. On June 5, 1951 he married Ruth Wiseman from Grove City, PA. They were blessed with two sons, Jim and Mark. He taught schools in Lawton, Birmingham, Moravia, Ottumwa, Kurtz Jr. High in Des Moines, and retired from Lincoln High School in Des Moines, a total of 42 years. Besides his family and church, he enjoyed teaching, coaching, golfing, bowling, little league, and writing poems. During some summer months he worked as a Nurse's Aide at Mercy Hospital and volunteered at Hospice. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-brother, Bill Calhoun; and step-sister, Ethelyn Oates. He will be mourned by his wife, Ruth; sons, Mark and Jim (Suellen); grandson, Joshua; and granddaughter, Meredith Coe (Ben). Additional survivors include sisters-in-law, Marlene Domenig (George), Anna Mae Wiseman, Barb Wiseman; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 30, 2010 at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave, Des Moines with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. A visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Central Iowa Kavanagh House on 56th Street in loving memory of Frank.
