The Life of THOMAS LEROY ALLEN Sr.
Tom Allen Sr., 84, passed away peacefully on January 27th, 2009, from orneriness. Tom was the husband of Lennis Allen, father of Tom Jr. (Debbie) Allen, Jenelle Patterson (Jerry Gymer), and Vonda (Al) Ramsey. Grandfather of Monica Allen, Shawn (Heather) Allen, Ron Patterson, Crystal (Kurt) Loving, Charles S. (Kim) Starmer, Brandi Starmer, and Krystal Starmer, along with 16 great-grandchildren and 3 on the way. Brother to Mable James, Mary (Chuck) McClain. Brother-in-law to Beverly Allen and Edith Allen, and “Uncle Tom” many nieces and nephews. He was preceeded in death by his parents Cecil Dale and Adelia Jane Allen, sisters La Von Biddle and Leone Bates, brothers Robert, Ray, Don, and Larry Allen, son Ed Starmer, and one great-grandchild. Tom was born on May 10th, 1924 in Des Moines. He was a veteran of the US Navy and served in WWII. He worked for Pulley Freight Lines, Super Valu, Webb’s Janitor Service, Dave’s Campers, and the Iowa Beer and Liquor Commission. Tom was actively involved in the Fort Des Moines Odd Fellows Lodge #25, a member of Simpson United Methodist Church, and was camp host at Yellow Banks Park. He loved car racing, square dancing, woodworking, and spending time with his family and many friends. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 8pm, with an Odd Fellows Service at 7pm, on Friday January 30th with funeral services on Saturday January 31st at 11am. Both will be at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Burial will be held at Highland Memory Gardens following the service. Please dress casual for the service. A special thank you to the staff of Mercy Medical Center on 6 North for their loving care of Grandpa Tom. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Taylor House Hospice or Simpson United Methodist Church.
